Lack of Transparency in Minister's Comments

Dear Members, we are sharing a video of a recent interview to provide insight into ongoing discussions between the Cayman Islands and Bermuda regarding public transportation systems. The purpose of this interview is to highlight the lack of transparency in the comments made by the Minister of Transport, Wayne Furbert, and to ensure our members are fully informed of the context and implications of these discussions.

The interview covers the recent visit by senior policy officials from the Cayman Islands Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport, and Development to Bermuda. Their objective was to learn from Bermuda’s public transportation system to make improvements to their own network. Minister Furbert described the talks as a success, emphasizing the strengthening of bilateral relations and the potential for future collaboration.

However, Randy Broadbelt, the public relations officer for the Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association (BTOA), raised concerns about the representation of Bermuda’s transportation system. He stressed the importance of involving industry experts and stakeholders to provide a factual and accurate picture, both to foreign visitors and to our government.

BTOA’s message underscores the need for transparency and stakeholder engagement in any discussions or potential adoptions of our transportation framework. BTOA advises Cayman officials to first consult with their own stakeholders to identify areas for improvement before looking externally. BTOA also invites them to speak directly with Bermuda’s industry experts to gain accurate insights and avoid the challenges we have faced.

Please take the time to watch the accompanying video to understand the full scope of the interview and the perspectives shared. It is crucial for us to recognize the importance of transparent communication and the value of involving all relevant stakeholders in such discussions.

Your attention to this matter is appreciated, and we look forward to any feedback you may have.

Best regards,

Randy Broadbelt
