Join BTOA and Help Shape the Future of Bermuda’s Transport Industry

The story of taxi service in Bermuda is woven into the very fabric of our island’s social, economic, and cultural life. Decades ago, transport evolved from buggies and carriages, through railways and omnibuses, until motor-taxis became the backbone of point-to-point mobility across Bermuda. Over time, taxi ownership in Bermuda grew beyond individual livelihoods. Families, many of whom remain active in the industry today, helped shape the island’s hospitality, tourism, and community identity. The taxi industry became not just a means of transport, but a foundation for generational enterprise, local businesses, guest-houses, and visitor services.

The Early 2000s Onwards: Challenges, Change, Opportunity

By the early 2000s, shifting global trends, demand for digital convenience, evolving passenger expectations, and a more competitive tourism environment began to bring challenges. As visitor patterns changed and economic pressures mounted, many operators struggled with outdated dispatch systems, limited regulatory support, and declining industry cohesion. For many in the Bermuda taxi service and PSV (Public Service Vehicle) industry, this period demanded unity, advocacy, and a new vision for sustainability, not just as individual operators, but as a collective that could preserve livelihoods, maintain high standards, and modernize for the future.

Enter BTOA: Our Mission Takes Shape

It was against this backdrop that BTOA emerged (or consolidated its mission) to serve as the unified voice for taxi owners and operators across Bermuda. We committed ourselves to principles of professionalism, integrity, community engagement, and service excellence. Our aim: to provide members, from seasoned operators to new entrants, with support, resources, and a platform for collaboration. Rather than competing alone, taxi operators could now come together, share insights, and work in unity to protect their way of life, advance industry standards, and ensure a viable, sustainable future for Bermuda’s taxi and PSV community.

Driving Modernization: Advocacy, Innovation & Industry Standards

In recent years, BTOA has moved beyond traditional advocacy, taking active steps to modernize the entire taxi and PSV industry in Bermuda. Recognizing outdated dispatch systems and fragmented services, which led to long wait times and inconsistent customer experience, we developed a long-term strategic plan to transform the sector. Under the banner of our plan “Connecting Bermuda, Driving Progress,” we proposed a centralized dispatch system, technological integration, fleet modernisation, improved regulation, cashless payment options, and overall enhancement of service standards across taxis, minibuses, and limousines. This vision matured in 2025 with the launch of BTOA Connect, Bermuda’s first unified, driver-led digital dispatch and booking platform. The app empowers locally licensed drivers and operators, provides customers with instant booking, pre-arranged rides, live tracking, and modern payment options, all delivered under the guidance and oversight of BTOA. By embracing innovation, we are redefining what “taxi service” and “PSV industry” mean in Bermuda, ensuring convenience, reliability, safety, and local control.

Standing Up for Operators: Representation, Protection & Fair Regulation

As ride-sharing and informal dispatch networks began to emerge, BTOA remained vigilant. We recognized the potential threat these unregulated services posed to legally licensed operators, properly permitted PSV vehicles, and the integrity of Bermuda’s transport system. We’ve hosted industry-wide meetings, rallied members, and engaged regulators and the public to demand transparent, fair legislation, ensuring that every licensed taxi operator and PSV owner is respected, protected, and able to earn a sustainable living. Our advocacy is rooted in safeguarding the value of taxi permits, preserving the dignity of operators, and defending high standards of service and safety across the island’s transport sector.

Looking Ahead: A Unified Vision for Bermuda’s Transport Future

Today, BTOA stands as more than an association; we are a community, a movement, and a force for positive change. Our mission continues: to unite and empower taxi owners and operators, uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and champion a customer-centric, forward-thinking transport industry that serves residents and visitors alike. We envision a Bermuda where taxi and PSV services are not just about point-to-point rides, but about offering safety, reliability, environmental sustainability, and dignity for operators, while contributing meaningfully to the island’s economy, tourism, and community well-being. If you’re part of this story or wish to join the journey, BTOA welcomes you. Together, we drive progress, preserving our heritage, protecting our industry, and building a resilient future for all.
