When planning a trip to Bermuda, knowing how taxi fares are calculated can help you budget for your travel and avoid surprises. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to our beautiful island, understanding Bermuda’s taxi fare structure is key to making your journey smooth and stress-free.

In this blog, we’ll break down Bermuda’s taxi fare categories, explain how fares are calculated, and highlight how the Bermuda Taxi Owners & Operators Association (BTOA) ensures that all taxi operators follow the regulated cost structure. Plus, we’ll give you the latest fare details based on recent updates from Transport Control Department (TCD)

Bermuda’s taxi fare system is regulated by TCD and categorized into different rate structures based on distance, time, and specific travel circumstances. These categories are designed to ensure fair and consistent pricing: Rates Updated April 2024

Rate 1 – Daytime Standard Fare Mon-Sat: Starts at $5.93, Then every mile after $3.20 / $0.64 Per Fifth of Mile

  • Hours: 6:00 AM to 9:59 PM.
  • Purpose: General transportation during regular daytime hours.
  • Example: A ride from Hamilton to nearby beaches or tourist sites.
  • Fare: Charged per mile or based on time in traffic.

Rate 3 – Late Night and Holiday Fare: Starts at $7.41, Then every mile after $4.00 / $0.80 Per Fifth of Mile – a 25% Surcharge

  • Hours: 10:00 PM to 5:59 AM and public holidays.
  • Purpose: For late-night and holiday trips when demand is higher and operational costs increase.
  • Fare: Higher than Rate 1 to reflect these factors.

Rate 3 – Group Late Night and Holiday Fare: Starts at $8.89, Then every mile after $4.80 / $0.96 Per Fifth of Mile – a 50% surcharge

  • Purpose: Applies when carrying 5-7 passengers during late-night, Sundays and Holidays.
  • Example: A group trip late at night from the city of Hamilton to Southshore.
  • Fare: Slightly higher than individual rates to account for additional services or space.

Taxi fares in Bermuda are calculated based on two main factors:

  1. Distance-Based Pricing: Fares increase as the distance traveled increases. Short trips within a city like Hamilton cost less, while longer trips (e.g., to the airport or Dockyard) will cost more.
  2. Time-Based Pricing: When a taxi is idle due to traffic or waiting, the fare may also include time-based charges.

Additional Charges to Keep in Mind:

  • Luggage Fees: Expect small additional charges for heavy or extra luggage.
  • Waiting Time: If a driver waits for you during pickup or a stop, extra charges may apply.

In recent years, taxi fares in Bermuda have been adjusted to reflect rising operational costs while maintaining affordability. The current rates were updated April 2024 by Transport Minister Wayne Furbet, TCD ensures these rates are fair and transparent. Always check the meter rate or confirm with your driver before starting your trip for the most accurate fare information.

  • Currency: Bermuda Dollars (BMD) and U.S. Dollars (USD) are accepted interchangeably, with $1 USD equal to $1 BMD.
  • Payment Methods: Most taxis accept cash and major credit/debit cards. It’s always wise to confirm with your driver beforehand.

The Bermuda Taxi Owners & Operators Association (BTOA) collaborates with TCD to ensure:

  • Fair Compensation Advocacy: The BTOA actively advocates for fare rates that are aligned with the rising cost of living, ensuring fair compensation for taxi operators while maintaining affordability for passengers.
  • Driver Training: Operators are regularly trained on updates to rates and regulations.
  • Passenger Protection: Visitors and locals are encouraged to report discrepancies or unfair pricing, which the BTOA investigates promptly.
