Update and Call to Action on Meter Calibration Issues

Dear Members, As you are all aware, our industry is currently facing significant challenges due to unresolved issues with taxi meter calibration. We understand the frustration this is causing, especially as we enter our busiest season with the start of summer. The following provides an update and outlines our continued efforts to resolve these problems.

In a recent broadcast by Bermuda Broadcasting News, our ongoing struggles with meter calibration were highlighted. The report included interviews with our President, Ricky Tucker, and Public Relations Officer, Randy Broadbelt, who both emphasized the negative impact of these issues on our operations and income.

  • Many taxis are still operating with inaccurate meter calibration, leading to faulty meter readings.
  • Over 200 taxis are affected, causing financial strain and mistrust among passengers.
  • The calibration issue stems from timing problems, with the implementation of rate increases and calibration processes being rushed.
  • Despite assurances from TCD that the issue was isolated and being addressed, no substantial progress has been reported.
  1. Communication with TCD and Ministry of Transport: We have been actively seeking a resolution by communicating with TCD and the Ministry of Transport. We are pressing for urgent action to rectify the meter calibration problems.
  2. Public Awareness: We are keeping the public informed through our social media channels, stressing that the faults lie not with the drivers but with the rushed and poorly managed implementation by the authorities.
  3. Advocacy for Drivers: We continue to advocate for fair treatment of our members. Our goal is to ensure that drivers do not suffer financially or professionally due to issues beyond their control.

We need your support to amplify our collective voice:

  • Share the Video: Enclosed with this memo is a video of the recent news report. Please share this widely within your networks to raise awareness.
  • Engage on Social Media: Actively participate in discussions on our social media pages. Share your experiences and encourage your passengers to voice their support for a swift resolution.
  • Stay Informed: Keep abreast of updates from the BTOA. We will continue to provide information on any progress made or further actions required.

Conclusion

We understand the immense pressure this situation places on you, especially at the height of the tourism season. Your patience and cooperation are invaluable as we work to resolve these issues. We are committed to holding the responsible parties accountable and ensuring that our industry operates smoothly and fairly.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support.

Best regards,

Randy Broadbelt
