The Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association (BTOA) expresses growing concerns over meter readings’ inaccuracies, impacting passengers and drivers. Newly elected BTOA president, Ricky Tucker, emphasizes the urgent need for proper calibration to rectify the issue.
In a recent interview, Mr. Tucker highlighted the repercussions of the meter’s failure to account for wait times, resulting in incorrect fares displayed by the meter at the end of journeys. Mr. Tucker emphasized that such issues could have been prevented from the outset with adequate time.
Despite efforts to raise awareness and engage with government officials, Mr. Tucker reports that their concerns have fallen on deaf ears. While the government acknowledges the problem and claims to be working on it, taxi operators continue to face losses and frustrations, with some forced to return to the Transport Control Department (TCD) multiple times for recalibration.
Mr. Tucker calls for a swift resolution to the situation, emphasizing the importance of properly calibrated meters to ensure a fair and satisfactory experience for both passengers and drivers. He stresses the need for cooperation between the BTOA and the government to address the issue effectively.
In response to the concerns raised, the TCD has acknowledged the problem and stated that it is isolated to one vendor, affecting approximately 200 taxis. Both parties have committed to working together to rectify the situation promptly.
The BTOA urges all taxi operators to calibrate their meters to avoid further inconvenience to passengers and drivers.
