As the island prepares for the next tourism season, BTOA and the BTA+ Team are already planning additional course offerings to allow more operators to participate. The goal is clear: equip taxi professionals with modern service skills, a deeper historical context, and a renewed sense of pride in representing Bermuda’s hospitality values.

A Partnership Built on Professionalism and Progress

The AnchorBDA programme is a comprehensive training experience designed to build confidence, deepen knowledge, and align frontline workers with Bermuda’s tourism pillars. For taxi operators who interact with thousands of visitors each year, this training offers invaluable tools that enhance everyday service.

Strengthening Service Excellence

BTOA and BTA Celebrate Successful AnchorBDA Training for Taxi Operators

BTOA President Ricky Tucker praised the collaboration, noting the importance of strengthening industry standards through consistent learning opportunities.
“We appreciate the dedication of the BTA Tourism Standards & Training Team and are proud of every operator who has committed to completing AnchorBDA. Taxi service forms a major part of the visitor experience, and continued professional development strengthens not only our industry but Bermuda’s reputation as a world-class destination.”
Vice President Carol Lynn Smith echoed this gratitude and emphasised the value of the BTA–BTOA partnership.
“This training reflects what can be achieved when industry partners come together with a shared vision. Our operators showed real enthusiasm, especially during the historical and cultural components. Their commitment demonstrates how much pride taxi professionals take in representing Bermuda.”

Inside the AnchorBDA Experience

According to the BTA’s published overview, the AnchorBDA programme focuses on the core principles of hospitality and visitor engagement. Participants explore areas such as:

  • Modern customer service standards
  • Bermuda’s tourism strategy and visitor-journey expectations
  • Cultural knowledge, heritage awareness, and national identity
  • Inclusiveness and respectful communication
  • Professionalism, service ethics, and brand representation

Importantly, the programme is “City & Guilds Assured”, meaning it has achieved a quality-mark endorsement from the globally recognised vocational education organisation City & Guilds. On successful completion, participants receive a certificate and a co-branded digital credential/badge from City & Guilds and the BTA.

The course comprises six modules, and it can be taken via flexible formats, including an online version. This flexibility has allowed many taxi operators in the BTOA network to participate without disrupting their work commitments. The modules cover topics such as Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan, hospitality basics, culture and heritage, diversity, equity & inclusion, sustainability, and excellence in service.

Several BTOA members who completed the spring and summer sessions have already received their certificates and badges, enabling them to demonstrate to customers and partners their commitment to professional, up-to-date service.

Operator Reflections: Pride, Knowledge and New Skills

Feedback from participating drivers has been overwhelmingly positive. Operators shared that the experience not only sharpened their customer service abilities but also deepened their understanding of Bermuda’s history and cultural story. One longtime operator remarked:
“I’ve been giving tours for over twenty years, and I still learned things I never knew. The historical content was eye-opening and gave me new ways to talk about Bermuda. Visitors will definitely benefit from the extra context I can now share.”
Another driver highlighted the value of customer engagement training:
“The course helped me rethink how small interactions can shape someone’s whole holiday. It reminded me that we aren’t just drivers, we’re ambassadors.”
A third participant noted the importance of modern service expectations:
“Tourists today have higher expectations, and the course covered what they look for from the moment they get into a taxi. It was good to refresh my approach and learn how to adapt to different types of visitors.”
These reflections demonstrate the real impact of continued training. For many operators, the course wasn’t simply a requirement; it was an opportunity to refine their craft, strengthen their professionalism, and gain renewed pride in representing Bermuda’s story.

Supporting Industry Standards and Future Opportunities

BTOA continues to advocate for high professional standards and ongoing learning opportunities. Programmes such as AnchorBDA, the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) course, and the Blue Flag Tour Guide certification all play key roles in building a skilled, knowledgeable, and service-driven taxi workforce.

To support this commitment, The Journi App the Association’s digital dispatch platform will prioritise tour assignments for drivers who have completed AnchorBDA and other recognised certifications. This ensures that visitors receive the highest-quality service and that trained operators benefit from increased opportunities.

Upcoming AnchorBDA cohorts will be scheduled in the months ahead, with an emphasis on preparing operators before the start of the next tourism season. BTOA will work closely with the BTA Tourism Standards & Training Team to promote enrolment, encourage participation, and ensure operators have access to flexible training formats.

Operators are encouraged to register early for the next sessions, and BTOA will provide internal communications and scheduling support so that participation is as seamless as possible. The training is offered at no cost to participants, while the value in professionalisation and recognition is significant.

A Shared Vision for Bermuda’s Visitor Experience

The success of this year’s AnchorBDA participation underscores the strength of collaborative industry partnerships. It also reinforces the professionalism and commitment of taxi operators who go above and beyond to enhance the visitor experience.

Kindley Field Demonstration

As BTOA and BTA continue working together, both organisations remain focused on supporting the people who make Bermuda’s hospitality culture truly special. Whether through updated training, industry development initiatives, or community engagement, the goal remains the same: equip frontline workers with the knowledge, confidence, and skills that reflect the best of Bermuda.

The dedication shown by BTOA members who completed AnchorBDA, whether in person or online, demonstrates a strong foundation for the future of the taxi industry. Their efforts contribute not just to their own success, but to the quality and reputation of Bermuda’s entire tourism offering.
