Dear Members, We want to inform you about recent developments regarding a new ride-sharing service in Bermuda and the government’s response.
Recent Developments: A ride-sharing app called Island Go, which operates throughout the Caribbean has been set up in Bermuda. Bermuda Broadcasting News reporter Cooper Stevenson tested the service and discovered it functions similarly to other ride-sharing apps by allowing users to book rides and pay via the app.
A spokesperson for the Transport Control Department (TCD) emphasized that it is currently unlawful for private cars to carry passengers for hire or reward in Bermuda, regardless of whether the service is booked via an app or paid in cash. Only vehicles holding a valid public service vehicle license, such as taxis, are permitted to carry passengers for hire and reward.
The driver Cooper Stevenson interviewed was unaware of these legal requirements and had not taken out additional insurance for ride-sharing. After being informed, he considered deleting the app.

The emergence of Island Go and similar services poses a significant concern for our industry. It underscores the importance of adhering to legal requirements and ensuring a level playing field for all service providers.

We will keep you informed of any further developments. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to maintaining the integrity of our industry.
